Cheverly Village to assist local youngsters
We all benefit when city planners consider features that enable people of all ages to move about with ease.
Future City is a program in which middle school students envision and model cities of the future. This fall, local students will spend four months developing solutions to citywide sustainability issues. Teams of students compete at a regional level, and the first-place team in each region advances to the finals in Washington, D.C. With this year’s theme, the “Age Friendly City,” the students are to identify an issue that affects older people and to engineer two innovative solutions so seniors can remain active and independent. Cheverly Village will provide encouragement and assistance to our local teams. Whether or not you are part of Cheverly Village now, please consider assisting. These young people are the future designers of our communities!
Assist by being interviewed by students; reading student papers and scoring them anonymously online; and serving as a judge or managing other matters at the January 20, 2018, regional competition in Baltimore. 15th Anniversary of the Village Movement
The movement now embracing hundreds of villages across the country began fifteen years ago with the creation of Beacon Hill Village in Boston, MA. On Monday, September 25, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, more than 150 villages will hear and watch a simulcast of an anniversary celebration that will be live-streamed from the Boston Public Library. The principal speaker, Dr. Atul Gawande, author of the book Being Mortal, will talk about the value of community and choice as we grow older.
Cheverly Village will host a “watch party” of that celebration for our members and others interested in villages. It will be held in Cheverly at the home of a supporter. Doors will open at 4:30 pm. Seating will be limited, so please contact the Village if you would like to attend. [On July 18, Cheverly Village co-hosted a screening and a panel discussion about Being Mortal.
