For hundreds of years, Japanese artists have depicted birds and flowers in reference to seasonal linkages or as auspicious symbols. Exploring bird species in natural or idyllic surroundings, artists honed ink and brush skills for use in hanging scrolls, folding screens, ceramics and printed books. In early ceramics as well, bird motifs were rendered through inlaid slip designs, molding, and polychrome pigments to emulate on clay surfaces the painterly effects of ink on paper or fabric.  This event is posted on the Washington Area Village Exchange (WAVE).
