(From the June 2021 Cheverly Town Proclamation: WHEREAS, Texas was the last Confederate territory reached by the Union Army. On June 18, 1865, almost 2 1⁄2 years later, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas with 1800 troops. On June 19, 1865 he issued general Order Number 3 announcing the end of both the Civil War and slavery: )
CAACO and the Town of Cheverly presents a day in history! The celebration starts at noon out front at Cheverly Town Hall, 6401 Forest RD, Cheverly, MD 20785. Learn about the Juneteenth history and enjoy the festivities that we have for you: Buffalo Soldiers flag raising ceremony, food, vendors, raffles, live performances & more.
