2026 is the centennial of Cassatt's death in 1926 and there are any exhibitions being held around the country. The Washington DC exhibit features 14 oils on canvas along with two small rooms dedicated to her printmaking work in drypoint, aquatint and soft ground etching. When Cassatt painted "Woman With a Sunflower" in 1905, the sunflower was the official symbol of the National American woman Suffrage Association. Was she making a statement?
Mary Cassatt was the only American and one of few women to have been accepted into the French impressionist boys' club.
Since the exhibition is relatively small, plan to take time to have lunch in one of the Gallery's cafeterias. Please feel free to bring your own beverage and necessary snacks.
Meet at the Cheverly Town Center for transportation to the National Gallery of Art via an accessible 17 passenger van provided by Cheverly Village. The van can accommodate one or two wheelchairs which we need to know about ahead of time. Prepare to walk a fair distance once in the Gallery.
Cheverly Village members request transportation to the Community Center by calling the Coordinator.
Invite a Cheverly friend or neighbor to join us on this excursion. Seating is limited!
